Tempe, AZ--Tartesso Elementary School, recently built by A&P and designed by DLR Group, has been certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).  The school, located in the Saddle Mountain Unified School District, is the first fully state-funded school in Arizona to achieve this level of certification and only the third LEED Silver school in the state.

The Tartesso Elementary School project, located in Tonopah, Arizona, incorporated highly efficient, sustainable strategies in both the site and building design. The 69,300 SF single-building concept accommodates 750 K-8 students. “We are proud to not only offer students a stimulating educational environment, but a safe, healthy, and green one also,” said Saddle Mountain Superintendent Mark Joraanstad.

A&P worked with DLR Group architects and engineers to design and construct the building through budgets set and funded by the Arizona State School Facilities Board. Sustainable elements included efficient plumbing fixtures that annually save an estimated 500,000 gallons of water, a high-performance building envelope, and the use of recycled, low-VOC, local and regional materials throughout the building. “The project exemplifies what can be accomplished with early collaboration among the design team and contractor,” said Bryan Dunn, A&P Senior Vice President and a LEED Accredited Professional.

The school also improved indoor environmental quality by bringing day-lighting into all occupied academic spaces and designing over 90% of occupied spaces with direct views to the outside. In a letter to the school and design team, Richard Fedrizzi, President of USGBC, identified this project as a pioneering example of sustainable design and demonstrated leadership in transforming the building industry.
