Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP), a national, family-owned construction management and contracting company, broke ground on 97,350 square feet of renovation projects for Austin Independent School District’s (AISD) McCallum and Anderson High Schools on May 5 and 12, respectively. The Anderson High School project totals $47.4 million while McCallum High School is a $66.5 million project.
Local dignitaries, AISD leaders and students participated in the groundbreaking ceremonies with the AP team.
“AP recognizes the incredible responsibility and honor of creating spaces where students can learn and flourish by delivering quality renovations that enhance the educational environment,” said Tommy Meserole, AP’s Senior Director of Preconstruction. “Schools are the heart of the community, fostering growth and connection and we are dedicated to providing exceptional work to support these campuses.”
Opened in 1955, McCallum High School’s expansion includes the Science and CTE department, with AP constructing a modern, three-story, 54,000-square-foot building with computer labs, robotics, wood shop, biology, chemistry and physics spaces. Located in North Austin at 5600 Sunshine Dr., the existing 30,000-square-foot science wing will be demolished. Additionally, AP will reconfigure the secure entry vestibule and remodel the front office. AP’s contracted $32 million updates will accommodate 1,542 students. The total project cost for AISD is almost $67 million.
Anderson High School, at 8403 Mesa Dr. in Northwest Austin, was built in 1970. The renovation includes a 43,350-square-foot competition gym with an 1,800-seat capacity and locker rooms with coaches’ offices, training rooms, officials’ dressing rooms and laundry. Common spaces will feature a Hall of Honor and trophy cases, while the entry vestibule and front office will be reconfigured for security. AP’s contracted $24 million project is designed to accommodate the school’s 2,397 students. AISD’s total project cost is more than $47 million.
Austin ISD is the state’s eighth largest district, encompassing 116 schools consisting of elementary, middle, high, early college, academy, magnet, alternative and community schools. District enrollment from the 2023/24 school year is 73,707 students.
“Investing in modern facilities is paying it forward to our students. Updated science classrooms, labs and resources create an environment where innovation thrives and every student has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential,“ said McCallum High School principal Andy Baxa.
“The new athletic facilities are more than just a place to play; they’re vital for developing teamwork, discipline and physical well-being. They provide a platform for students to build character, learn important life skills and foster a sense of community and school pride,” said Anderson High School principal Brian Lancaster.
Targeted completion for the construction and renovation projects is January 2027. PBK Architects designed both schools.
