Apache ASL Trails Apartments
This unique new housing project is Arizona’s first all-deaf community, providing a barrier-free community for deaf seniors 55 years and older who communicate primarily with American Sign Language (ASL). Situated along the light rail line, the tax-credit transit-oriented housing project includes 75 units, all of which incorporate state-of-the-art technology, including flashing light signalers for phone and doorbell, hookups for videophones, and a loop amplification system for hearing aids. All of the operations staff use ASL to communicate. The owner retained a deaf architect to ensure the use and proper placement of lighting and other elements that the deaf have a heightened sense to. The four-story building also incorporates retail and community spaces on the ground floor.
