Orville Freeman Office Building

Location: St. Paul, Minnesota

Client: State of Minnesota
Design Partners: Hammel, Green & Abrahamson

The Orville Freeman office building was a public job for the Minnesota Departments of Health and Agriculture located on the north side of downtown St. Paul neighboring a proposed LRT station. Capitol District Planning required strict site–use guidelines during construction that were carried out within a high density urban area. The building is 7–stories tall with a partial basement and penthouse. 18,000 square feet of terrazzo covers the semi–public floor at the entrance. The majority of the floor in the working office space is raised access flooring designed to simplify the ease of wiring changes in the future. Two ninety–foot atriums divide the building into three sections to promote the use of natural light in everyday activities.
