Gypsum Recreation Center
Location: Gypsum, Colorado
Client: Town of Gypsum
Design Partners: Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture
This new 59,000 square foot recreation center features a lap pool, lazy river with a large waterslide, locker rooms, large gymnasium, gymnastics area, basketball courts, running track, and a climbing wall. The large climbing wall and climbing pinnacle highlight the lounge area, which is accented by a rustic stone fireplace and a spacious pyramid shaped skylight.
A unique aspect of the construction of the recreation center was its location. Although the building was slated to be on an open space where the town holds a country music festival, the community and festival goers were concerned about losing the open green. By recessing the building into a hillside, the open space was preserved. Due to this unique location, the project incorporated a large site–work package, which included importing 40,000 cubic yards of dirt and installing an underground drainage system.
