Gypsum Recreation Center

Gypsum, Colorado
Size: 59,000 SF
A&P Role:

This new recreation center features a lap pool, lazy river with a large waterslide, locker rooms, large gymnasium, gymnastics area, basketball courts, running track and a climbing wall. The large climbing wall and climbing pinnacle highlight the lounge area, which is accented by a rustic stone fireplace and a spacious pyramid shaped skylight.

A unique aspect of the construction of the recreation center was its location. Although the building was slated to be on an open space where the town holds a country music festival, the community and festival goers were concerned about losing the open green. By recessing the building into a hillside, the open space was preserved. Due to this unique location, the project incorporated a large site-work package, which included importing 40,000 cubic yards of dirt and installing an underground drainage system.

“From the very beginning during the selection process for a Construction Manager/General Contractor, AP was the only team to fully understand both the vision of the owner and design team as well as the challenges of construction in a small mountain community. They came first to listen and then helped guide us through the construction process enabling us to achieve much more that we believed was possible… Primarily due to the efforts of Adolfson & Peterson, the project came in under budget and the town was able to opt for all the things on their wish list.” —Chuck Musgrave, AIA, Principal, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture
