AP and Douglas Unified School District Top Out Douglas High School

$22 million expansion and renovation project reaches construction midpoint

DOUGLAS, Ariz. – Nov. 14, 2022 – Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP), a top national construction management firm and general contractor, and Douglas Unified School District #27 (DUSD) topped out Douglas High School (DHS), marking the midpoint of the school’s expansion and renovation.

Four new pre-engineered metal buildings totaling 87,504 square feet will expand the existing campus to the north. The $22 million project includes new classrooms, updated facilities, new sports equipment and athletic fields, a refreshed exterior, a new fire lane, a concrete paver turnaround for easier access and a new canopy shade structure.

“DHS has multiple programs designed to facilitate and support its students’ success, which has been at the center of AP’s focus throughout this project,” said Ruth Sikorski, AP’s Project Manager. “We are continuing to work hand-in-hand with DUSD to answer each of their needs and deliver a facility equipped for the students, staff and community.”

Located at 1500 15th Street, the 87,504-square-foot expansion and renovation was designed by Sketch Architecture with Estimating Plus as the project manager for DUSD. DHS is slated for completion January 2023.

“Now that we’re decently into the school year, it’s motivating to see the progress made on DHS’s extended space,” Ana Samaniego, DUSD Superintendent. “Soon, we will be fully equipped to serve our students in every aspect of their education experience.”

DHS’ expansion and renovation plans provide a new cafeteria, upgraded common areas, 16 multipurpose teaching spaces and multiple science classrooms with lab space for STEM classes. A counseling department and innovative space for DHS’ special needs students will also be housed in the new buildings. The added space allows DHS multiple areas to increase and upgrade its Career and Technical Education programs along with a new theater for its performing arts program and a new facility for its athletic and physical education department.
