Overview

The new recreation center for the City of Allen is a 150,000 square foot, multi level facility situated on more than 85 acres and designed to serve a wide range of community recreation and wellness needs. The center features multiple gymnasiums, fitness and cardio areas, an indoor walk and adventure track, classrooms, collaborative spaces, a child watch area, café, and catering kitchen, along with associated parking, site work, and a concrete trail system.

More about the project

The project presented several unique construction challenges, including expansive soil conditions and a complex structural system that combined tilt wall panels, elevated structural slabs, and steel framing. To address these constraints, the team developed a strategic phasing plan that allowed tilt wall panels to be cast on portions of the structural slab while maintaining crane access for erection. The project team also implemented innovative solutions to protect specialty finishes such as maple wood athletic flooring and polished concrete, including environmental monitoring during installation. Despite a severe hailstorm that damaged the roof late in construction, the team quickly replaced the roofing system and maintained strict moisture and humidity controls to protect interior finishes, successfully delivering a high-quality recreation facility for the community.
