Lee H. Brown Family Conservation Learning Center at Tucson's Reid Park Zoo
The learning center was the first LEED Platinum Certified building in Southern Arizona, the third in the entire state, and the first LEED Platinum facility in any zoo or aquarium. Sustainable features include salvaged and recycled materials, pervious concrete, bamboo carpentry, alternative fuel stations, photovoltaics (48% of the facility’s energy), and operable windows. With the location of this facility at the center of Reid Park Zoo, a collaborative approach was required during construction to ensure the continued operations of the zoo campus and the safety of the animals. The project was completed under budget.
