The campus expansion project includes construction of the new Nelson Cultural Center and renovations to the historic Turnblad mansion. The 34,000 sf Nelson Cultural Center features an art gallery, large studio and crafts workshop, and flexible event and office space. A 10,000 sf renovation of the 1908 Turnblad Mansion – which has housed the Institute for more than 80 years – creates more public gathering and classroom space and provides grounds for community festivals. In addition to various site improvements, construction also included a walkway and a stair/elevator tower connecting the new facility with the Turnblad mansion. This project achieved (LEED®) Gold certification. The Cultural Center will also features several sustainable elements, including a geothermal system, green roof, water reclamation system, and various sustainable building materials.
