The books, manuscripts and artifacts in the Archives and Special Collections Department of the University of Minnesota Libraries are among the most valuable cultural documents available anywhere. These materials range from four thousand year old Babylonian clay tablets to the latest illustrated children’s books. Many of these internationally renowned collections have been brought together for the first time in this state-of-the-art facility.
The project consists of the renovation and remodel of 5,000-sf of rare book storage on high density shelving on the basement level and a 12,000-sf renovation of the Special Collections Research Center on the ground floor of Anderson Library.
