Overview

Adolfson & Peterson Construction delivered a comprehensive renovation and new construction project at Richland High School, transforming the campus while maintaining full operations for students and staff. The project included 266,000 square feet of new construction, the renovation of 86,000 square feet of existing space, and the demolition of 200,000 square feet of older buildings.

The new construction features classrooms, science labs, art rooms, and administrative offices, while renovations upgraded food service facilities, three gymnasiums, locker rooms, the field house, ROTC areas, the girls’ weight room, and the auditorium. Extensive MEP upgrades—including new electrical, HVAC, fire safety, plumbing, and mechanical systems—were integrated throughout the campus to support the facility’s size and complexity.

More about the project

Safety and continuity were paramount during construction on the fully occupied campus. AP built temporary, enclosed, and lit egress corridors with fire-rated walls and emergency lighting to direct students and staff safely through and around construction zones. These corridors, which passed directly through active construction areas, were engineered to withstand high winds and integrated with existing buildings and new construction. Noise mitigation, temporary walls, and covered windows ensured minimal disruption to learning.

The project also required ongoing coordination with city construction efforts surrounding the campus to manage deliveries, parking, and access for students and staff. Despite these complexities, AP completed the project nearly four months ahead of schedule, delivering modernized and expanded facilities—including offices, classrooms, science and arts wings, cafeteria, auditorium, band and choir halls, library, gyms, agriculture building, ROTC space, and common areas—on time and safely.

This project highlights AP’s expertise in managing large-scale, high-complexity construction on occupied campuses while prioritizing safety, communication, and operational continuity.
