Overview

The Preston Garage is a 33,000 square foot underground parking facility serving a private residence in Highland Park. Designed to accommodate up to 77 vehicles, the structure was built to support gatherings and events hosted at the owner’s private library, including research visits, social functions, and charitable fundraisers. The garage was designed with versatility in mind and also includes a full length basketball court, providing a recreational space for the family throughout the year.

More about the project

A defining feature of the project is a 100 foot subterranean tunnel that connects the basement of the existing residence to the new garage. Located approximately 12 feet below grade, the tunnel was carefully constructed to navigate between two large concrete piers that support the home’s main entrance. The garage structure incorporates an innovative roof system consisting of 16 cast in place post tension concrete beams spanning up to 105 feet without intermediate columns. These beams support a reinforced concrete roof slab and create a wide open interior space that maximizes parking flexibility.

The facility is climate controlled and fully protected by a dry pipe fire sprinkler system for safety. Ventilation is provided by a large capacity exhaust system designed to quietly and efficiently remove vehicle emissions, ensuring a comfortable and well ventilated environment within the underground structure.
